Da Vinci Code
Just finished reading it. I bought it yesterday before getting on my plane from Chicago to LA. Its a really compelling read. Here are a few thoughts:
1) "Its like reading the show "24", as quoted from Andy Le Peau, Editor of InterVarsity Press. I agree. It was a page-turner;
2) All of the gnostic, sacred feminine, and anti-organized religion underpinnings are very relevant issues on campus, even if they go by other names;
3) Like the cover says, its 'a novel.' Period. End of STORY.
Update: "Compelling" from a murder-mystery point of view. In terms of historical accuracy, or theological research, there is little. He does do a "good" job of decieving the reader by mixing in actual facts into his characters voices so that later, when they spout inaccuracies, half-truths, and straight out lies, they sound credible.

Much has been said about the theology of the Da Vinci Code, and a lot said about how exciting it is. I'll weigh in on the literary merits: it has none. Dan Brown is the worst bestselling author since LaHaye & Jenkins. His dialogue is awful, he barely bothers to disguise his shameless proselytizing, and almost EVERY SINGLE CHAPTER ends with a cliffhanger. In more literate times, these would add up to the universal conclusion that the author is a hack. In modern America, Dan Brown is celebrated as a genius.

Hey, I don't know you, but I read your blog from time to time. Thanks for the review on "The Da Vince Code." I am a Christian, but most of my family is either not, or they are confused about Truth. Some of them have read the book and believe some of the "facts." I haven't had time to read it, but from your previous posts, I trust your point of view. Have a wonderful weekend!
Megan,
If you are interested in more info about the facts & fiction of the Da Vinci Code, I recommend a book by IVP called The Gospel Code. Very insightful.
